In Buduburam, 1 in 4 children do not live to see their fifth birthday. The camp is plagued by waterborne disease, malnutrition, malaria, and untreated sexually transmitted disease. Imagine a health ailment, and it’s probably a problem in Buduburam. The residents of the camp are in desperate need of quality medical care, and the nearest hospital is well over a half an hour away from the camp, and well beyond any of the refugees’ financial means.
St. Gregory’s Catholic Clinic was founded by the Catholic Community Services organization for the purpose of providing the refugees with basic medical care. While the clinic does its best to serve the needs of the camp, conditions there are far from ideal. Sick patients must heal themselves on torn mattresses, often unadorned by clean bed-sheets. Soon-to-be mothers give birth while their legs are propped up on rust-stained stirrups, without the luxury of an epidural, while their anxious family members sit nearby on broken furniture. Point Hope contributes to the health and welfare of the camp by funding the salaries of one full-time physician, Dr. Joe Riverson, and four full-time nurses. Together with Dr. Daniel, these individuals provide almost all of the medical care for the camp's 40,000+ residents. Please join us in our effort to make medical care widely available.
