One of the problems in Buduburam is that the atmosphere of hope that we are tryi ng to establish is polluted by the stench of raw sewage and rotting trash. Litter carpets the camp; at the outskirts, children climb and play upon mountains of garbage. The camp does not have enough trash receptacles to accommodate the needs of Buduburam’s 40,000+ residents, and several of the receptacles they do have, such as the one shown here, have no lids, and the sides are rotted through by rust. Wind sweeps some of the trash up, out, and into the streets, while Ghana’s torrential rains wash other trash out and into the water supply.
The inescapable fi lth in the camp contributes to the spread of disease and despair. Point Hope has launched a sanitation initiative to combat the litter problem. Our efforts are manifest through community education and the funding of a volunteer-run litter patrol. You can help us clean up Buduburam by clicking the banner below, and pledging your support.
