Daniel's Story

In the summer of 2007, Dr. John Lawrence, a pediatric surgeon and loyal listener of the Delilah program, went to Buduburam. He examined a number of children and identified those in need of extensive surgery.  This list was provided to us, but there was little we could do at the time; Buduburam's clinic simply lacked the facilities and personnel necessary to carry out the intricate procedures that the children needed.

When a staffer caught a segment about the charity group Our Children International (OCI for short), on the CBS Nightly News, a process was set in motion that would result in bringing some hope to those in need of critical surgery.  As it turns out, OCI's next mission was scheduled for Ghana.  We provided them with the list of names that Dr. John had provided us, and they agreed to treat as many children as possible.

This past March they worked on 11 of the children. Daniel (the boy in the photos you have) was one of the children treated. He was given a prosthetic eye. Point Hope provided transportation and lodging to the families as the hospitals were located far from the camp. OCI provided the surgeries. The doctors in Buduburam, Dr. Joe Riverson and Dr. Daniel Gallegos, provided after care.

OCI provides surgical care to children in many parts of the world. Point Hope sprang from Delilah’s desire to help the children in Buduburam. By uniting our forces we were able to give these children the chance for a much brighter future.
